Positive Aspects of the Blackberry Torch 9800

Navigability: A great feature about the Blackberry Torch 9800 is that you have the option of using either the touchscreen or the physical keyboard to navigate through your smartphone. Some users may love the user-friendliness of the Blackberry operating system, but aren't in love with the small keyboard. Now they can use the touch screen as they enjoy all the benefits of the Blackberry OS.

Display: The Blackberry Torch 9800 features a 3.2 inch screen which, although smaller than other smartphones in its class, is one of the larger Blackberry models.

Online Connectivity: The Blackberry Torch 9800 supports Wi-Fi and HSDPA connectivity, and can also act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for your laptop.

Communication Features: Blackberry has always been known as a great smartphone manufacturer, mostly because of its specialized way of handling emails and messaging, and the Blackberry Torch 9800 is no different. If you're looking for a smartphone with the primary purpose of using it for texts and emails, then you will find this smartphone very useful.

Negative Aspects of the Blackberry Torch 9800

Operating System: In trying to make their smartphones more user-friendly, Blackberry has borrowed a few pages from the Android OS, namely adding more home screen options and a notification bar. The Blackberry 6 OS is great for organizing your emails and messages, however, it is lacking in a few areas.

In comparison to the iPhone and Android app markets, Blackberry has far fewer apps available for users to download. As for the apps that are available, some seem to have a poorer quality feeling to them on this device. The Blackberry operating system isn't supported all that well by developers any more, which is one of the main reasons why users are switching to other major OS's.

Speakers: There have been reports that the speakers on the Torch 9800 are not very loud and make hearing phone conversations very difficult. It also lacks an FM radio tuner, which almost comes as standard on most smartphones these days.

Resolution: Compared to its biggest market rivals, the screen on the Blackberry Torch 9800, with its resolution of 480 by 360 pixels, isn't much to talk about. The display is adequate for a Blackberry, but the screen could definitely be clearer.

Processor: The 624 MHz Marvell PXA940 in the Blackberry Torch 9800 is powerful enough to fluidly run programs and apps without large wait-times. However, compared to the 1 GHz Snapdragon processors found in its biggest competition in the market, this Blackberry smartphone doesn't handle multitasking very well.

Style: This is a very durable smartphone, though it might feel a little clunky in your hand. This is one of the challenges of trying to combine a physical Qwerty keyboard and a touch screen all into one device.

Price: When compared to other smartphones in its class, the Blackberry Torch 9800 seems to be a bit overpriced for the features that come with it. You can probably find a cheaper smartphone with more capabilities elsewhere.

Life of Battery: The standby time of 432 hours is notable for this smartphone, but the 5.5 hours of talk time is only average, if not below average.

Camera Options: The Blackberry Torch 9800 comes equipped with a 5 MP rear-facing camera that'll take quality photos as far as photos taken with a smartphone go. The downfall with this camera is its limitation in recording video. Where most smartphone cameras can record videos in HD, this camera can only record videos at a resolution of 640 by 480.

Is The Blackberry Torch 9800 The Right Smartphone For You?

The Blackberry Torch 9800 is your best option when looking for a smartphone with both a touch screen and a physical keyboard that specializes in emails and messaging. Compared to its biggest rivals in the market such as the iPhone 4 or HTC Droid Incredible 2, this smartphone falls a little short. The processor lags behind industry standards, and the cameras capabilities are a little limited. Overall, you may be better off finding a deal on a different smartphone.
